Our History

National Restaurant Designers has a rich history dating back to 1978. Our story began with Oscar Lehmann, who moved to Greensboro with the plan to open a pizza restaurant. Although he never did open the restaurant, he stayed in the area, continuing to make personal pizzas for his family. During this time, Lee Mehler and his wife, Francine, moved to Greensboro to complete Lee's Architectural Master's program at North Carolina State University.

After graduation, Lee met and partnered with Oscar to create LM Associates: a small Architectural firm focused on commercial shopping centers, retail, and university work. Over the years, the firm evolved and grew, eventually becoming National Restaurant Designers (NRD).
